Most people infected with the virus show few, if any, symptoms for a few years .But during this asymptomatic period, is actively multiplying, infecting, and kill cells in the immune system, particularly CD4+ T cells. HIV infection is usually acquired through sexual intercourse, exposure to contaminated blood or body fluids, or transmission from an affected woman to her baby during pregnancy, birth, or breast-feeding. In other words, infection is not spread by casual contact but rather through direct exposure to infected blood or body fluids. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is infection with a virus that gradually destroys cells in the immune system. Symptoms of infection develop in 50 to 90 percent of infected patients. Some people who contract experience very strong symptoms, but others experience none at all.
HIV infection is highly contagious at this stage because there are large amounts of the virus in the blood and other bodily fluids. As an example, a man could potentially infect 7 to 24 percent of susceptible female partners during the first two months of infection. Recognizing symptoms early, being tested for HIV, and starting treatment as soon as possible could help to decrease the risk of transmitting to another person. The initial signs and symptoms of include problems like fever, muscle and joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes. Because these signs and symptoms may be caused by other common illnesses like the flu, most people do not initially realize that they have HIV.
In most patients, symptoms of begin about two to four weeks after exposure. However, there have been instances in which up to 10 months have passed between exposure and the first signs and symptoms of infection.
The symptoms typically have an abrupt onset, beginning with a fever between 100.4ºF (38ºC) to 104ºF (40ºC). Most patients tend to develop the "full-blown" syndrome within one to two days. During the second week of the illness, most patients also have painless swelling of certain lymph nodes, including those under the arms and in the neck. Although the lymph nodes decrease in size after the first few weeks, some moderate swelling remains. Some patients develop mild enlargement of the spleen (known as splenomegaly).
On average, these symptoms last for about two weeks. However, some patients experience lingering fatigue, listlessness, or depression that lasts for weeks to months.
Skin, mouth, genital symptoms ¡ª A characteristic feature of acute infection is open sores or ulcers involving the mucous membranes and skin in certain areas of the body. They may be located in the mouth; the esophagus (throat, which extends from the mouth to the stomach); the anus; or the penis. Ulceration involving the esophagus often causes pain during swallowing. The ulcers tend to be shallow, with sharply defined edges, and are typically swollen and painful.Many patients also develop a rash or reddish inflammation of the skin about two to three days after the onset of fever. A new genetic study suggests that high-density lipoprotein, the so-called good cholesterol commonly known as HDL, may not actually be as good for us as physicians previously thought. A study of more than 100,000 people found that those with genes that promote production of higher-than-normal levels of HDL do not have a lower risk of having a heart attack, a finding that has surprised researchers immensely. National strategy on Alzheimer's disease aims to halt it by 2025
Asserting "we are at an exceptional moment" in the hunt for an Alzheimer'sdiseasetreatment, National Institutes of Health director Dr. Francis Collins on Tuesday promised a raft of new research aimed at stopping and reversing the memory-robbing disorder by the year 2025. Parkinson's disease may be diagnosed by studying colon, reports say

U.S. asthma rates at all-time high, CDC says
The proportion of Americans with asthma increased from 7.3% in 2001 to 8.4% in 2010, marking the highest level ever, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. In 2010, an estimated 18.7 million adults and 7 million children had the disease -- one in every 12 Americans. Ever sleep-walked? I have. At the age of 12, I woke up to find myself in a bedroom where a visiting kid was staying over, my head gently resting on the foot of the bed. Kids' ER visits resulting from battery exposure have doubled in two decades
Emergency room visits resulting from children swallowing batteries or sticking them into other orifices doubled between 1990 and 2009, researchers said Monday. There were an estimated 5,525 ER visits caused by batteries in 2009, with the bulk of them occurring in children under the age of 5, according to a team from Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Some of the longest-lasting relics of my kids’ infancies and toddlerhoods have been their pacifiers and their sippy cups. Even now, with the boys 3 and 5 years old, we devote two drawers in our kitchen to a collection of jumbled lids, valves and cups (many featuring slowly fading portraits of Lightning McQueen.) Weight-loss drug Lorcaserin: Definite maybe in 2nd run at FDA's OK
The proposed weight-loss drug Lorcaserin, rebuffed in its bid for Food and Drug Administration approval last October, on Thursday won a recommendation of approval from the agency's advisory committee, a major step toward winning the FDA's go-ahead to enter the U.S. market. Drug delays progression in myeloma, but is it worth the cost?
Lenalidomide, sold under the tradename Revlimid, significantly improves progression-free survival in patients with myeloma, according to three clinical trials published Wednesday. All three trials were so successful that the results were unblinded early and, in two of the three trials, patients receiving the placebo were switched to the active drug. But researchers also found that the drug doubled the risk of a second, independent cancer occurring, and it is not yet clear whether the drug produces an increase in overall survival. One in every six cancer deaths worldwide is caused by preventable infections, a total of 1.5 million deaths yearly that could be halted by widespread vaccination programs, researchers reported Wednesday. Since 1990, that number has grown by about half a million, suggesting that vaccination programs are losing ground in the battle rather than gaining it. The vast majority of the cases are caused by three viruses and a bacterium, which are the leading causes of gastric, liver and cervical cancers. Digestive symptoms ¡ª Many patients with primary infection develop nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite (known as anorexia), and associated weight loss. Rarely, more severe abnormalities of the digestive system develop, such as inflammation of the liver or the pancreas.
Respiratory symptoms ¡ª A dry cough is usually the only respiratory symptom associated with acute infection. A few rare cases have been reported in which patients developed inflammation of the lungs, resulting in difficulty breathing, coughing, and insufficient supply of oxygen to tissues.
Neurological symptoms ¡ª Headaches are common in persons with primary infection. Patients often describe pain behind the eyes that worsens with eye movement. Rarely, more severe neuralgic features have been reported, including:
Inflammation of the protective membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), with associated fever, severe headache, skin rash, abnormal sensitivity to light, or other signs
Inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), sometimes with meningitis. Symptoms can vary and may include fever, headache, confusion, personality disturbances, and episodes of uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain (seizures).
Impairment of certain "peripheral nerves" or motor and sensory nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. For example, following acute infection, some patients develop facial nerve paralysis; paralysis and muscle wasting (shrinking of muscle) of the arm; or Guillain-Barr¨¦ syndrome.
Guillain-Barr¨¦ syndrome causes weakness, tingling, and numbness that begins in the legs and progresses upward to the chest, arms, and facial area. Weakness is rapidly progressive and can sometimes lead to paralysis.
Opportunistic infections ¡ª After becoming infected with HIV, the immune system may not function as well to protect the body from organisms that do not usually cause disease. These organisms cause infections known as "opportunistic infections". While these opportunistic infections are more common in patients with AIDS who have had for many years, they can occur less commonly in people with primary infection as well.
Opportunistic infections may include yeast infections in the mouth or esophagus. Yeast infections are caused by Candida, a yeast-like fungal organism that is normally found on the skin and in the mouth, intestinal tract, and vagina in healthy individuals. Candidacies of the mouth, also known as thrush, causes cream-colored, slightly raised patches in the mouth, soreness, and easy bleeding. Candidacies of the esophagus may cause difficulty swallowing. Candidacies of the vagina is known as a yeast infection . Candidacies does occur in people without HIV, although people with are at a higher risk for this and other types of opportunistic infection.
There is no way to know for sure if someone else has HIV. Many people with look perfectly healthy. Other people who are sick with may have symptoms that are identical to other common illnesses. You cannot tell by looking whether someone is positive. The only way to know for sure is if someone tells you. It is important to consider how well you know someone and how much you trust them when talking about sex and HIV.
