HIV AIDS Overview By Johnson
HIV AIDS Overview HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It causes the part of the body that defends against disease (the immune system) to not work right. There are usually no visible symptoms during the early years of infection so it is not possible to tell if your partner has unless he or she has had an blood test. Also, many people with look healthy and can transmit HIV. HIV can lead to death about 10 years after being infected but there are now good treatments available. HIV is a preventable infection. The virus is spread by sex and by sharing drugs by needles and syringes. You can't get HIV/AIDS from casual contact. What that means is that you won't get AIDS from hugging someone, from an insect, from a restaurant worker, from swimming or from sharing a sandwich. HIV infection has now spread to every country in the world. Approximately 40 million people are currently living with infection, and an estimated 25 million have died from this disease. The scourge of has been particularly devastating in sub-Saharan Africa, but infection rates in other countries remain high. In the United States, approximately 1 million people are currently infected. Here are a few key points about the disease:
Globally, 85% of transmission is heterosexual.
In the United States, approximately one-third of new diagnoses appear to be related to heterosexual transmission. Male-to-male sexual contact still accounts for approximately half of new diagnoses in the U.S. Intravenous drug use contributes to the remaining cases. Because the diagnosis may occur years after infection, it is likely that a higher proportion of recent infections are due to heterosexual transmission.
Infections in women are increasing. Worldwide, 42% of people with are women. In the United States, approximately 25% of new diagnoses are in women, and the proportion is rising.
There is good news on one front: New infections in U.S. children have fallen dramatically, with only 38 cases reported in 2006. This is largely a result of testing and treating infected mothers, as well as establishing uniform testing guidelines for blood products. In order to understand and AIDS, it is important to understand the meanings behind these terms: HIV stands for the human immunodeficiency virus. It is one of a group of viruses known as retroviruses. After getting into the body, the virus kills or damages cells of the body's immune system. The body tries to keep up by making new cells or trying to contain the virus, but eventually the wins out and progressively destroys the body's ability to fight infections
and certain cancers.
AIDS stands for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is caused by and occurs when the virus has destroyed so much of the body's defenses that immune-cell counts fall to critical levels or certain life-threatening infections or cancers develop. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. This is the virus that causes AIDS. is different from most other viruses because it attacks the immune system. The immune system gives our bodies the ability to fight infections. finds and destroys a type of white blood cell (T cells or CD4 cells) that the immune system must have to fight disease. AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. AIDS is the final stage of infection. It can take years for a person infected with HIV, even without treatment, to reach this stage. Having AIDS means that the virus has weakened the immune system to the point at which the body has a difficult time fighting infections. When someone has one or more of these infections and a low number of T cells, he or she has AIDS. Whereas there are symptoms of HIV, the only way to know that you are living with the virus is to be tested. Everyone should know their status to protect themselves and others
AIDS was first reported in the United States in 1981 and has since become a major worldwide epidemic. AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. By killing or damaging cells of the body’s immune system, progressively destroys the body’s ability to fight infections and certain cancers. People diagnosed with AIDS may get life-threatening diseases called opportunistic infections. These infections are caused by microbes such as viruses or bacteria that usually do not make healthy people sick. Since 1981, more than 980,000 cases of AIDS have been reported in the United States to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to CDC, more than 1,000,000 Americans may be infected with HIV, one-quarter of whom are unaware of their infection. The epidemic is growing most rapidly among minority populations and is a leading killer of African-American males ages 25 to 44. According to CDC, AIDS affects nearly seven times more African Americans and three times more Hispanics than whites. In recent years, an increasing number of African-American women and children are being affected by HIV/AIDS.
