HIV Antibody test Window Period By Anil Shaw
HIV Antibody test Window Period The "window period" is the time it takes for a person who has been infected with to react to the virus by creating antibodies. This is called seroconvert ion. antibodies don't appear the day after you infected, so it is not possible to find out if you have been infected immediately after a possible risk. This is because, when you go for an test, usually it is the antibodies that are being tested for . During the window period, people infected with may not have antibodies in their blood, but may already have very high levels of in their blood, sexual fluids or breast milk In fact, people with are most infectious during this window period before their own immune system has tried to control the virus. So you could potentially be affected by someone during this window period, even though an antibody test shows that he is HIV-negative. Do you know how long is the window period, The antibodies are generally appear within three months after infection with HIV, but may take up to six months in some persons. This CDC definition of a three to six month window period has been commonly used for a number of years . The three month window period is normal for most of the population. Many people will have detectable antibodies in three or four weeks. Very, very rarely (i.e., only a few cases ever), a person could take six months to produce antibodies. You may be anxious to be tested soon after an encounter which you perceive to be risky (for a discussion of what behaviors put you at risk for and which ones do not, see the section on How Is Spread). You want to know: can I be antibody tested without waiting three months? How accurate is the test after, say, six weeks? Unfortunately, we simply don't know. Think about this: if you got a negative test at six weeks, would you believe it? Would it make you less anxious? If

so, then go for it. But to be certain, you will need to be tested again at three months. Some test centers may recommend testing again at six months, just to be extra sure. Although may not be detected by a test during the window period, can be transmitted during that time. In fact, individuals are often most infectious during this time (shortly after they have been exposed to HIV). Each time you put yourself at high risk, you also risk moving & re-starting the window period. So YOU CAN protect yourself by always practice safe sex. The window period is the period between the onset of infection and the appearance of detectable antibodies to the virus. In the case of the most sensitive antibody tests currently recommended, the window period is about three to four weeks. This period can, however, be longer. Any antibody-based blood tests (such as the ELISA, rapid tests and the Western Blot) conducted during this window period may give false negative results. Antibodies are produced from about three weeks after infection and usually become detectable by four to six weeks after infection. This four- to six-week period between infection and a positive test is called the window period. In some people, the window period may be longer; although unusual, it may take up to three months for an antibody test to become positive after they have been infected. People who think that they might have been exposed to infection are therefore usually asked to wait at least four weeks before having the test. Also, even if the first test is negative (i.e. no antibodies detected), a follow-up test should be done three months after the suspected exposure.
