The origin of AIDS and HIV By Jestin Cons
The origin of AIDS and HIV - The origin of AIDS and has puzzled scientists ever since the illness first came to light in the early 1980s. For over twenty years it has been the subject of fierce debate and the cause of countless arguments, with everything from a promiscuous flight attendant to a suspect vaccine programmed being blamed. So what is the truth? Just where did AIDS come from?
The first recognized cases of AIDS occurred in the USA in the early 1980s.A number of gay men in New York and California suddenly began to develop rare opportunistic infections and cancers that seemed stubbornly resistant to any treatment. At this time, AIDS did not yet have a name, but it quickly became obvious that all the men were suffering from a common syndrome.
The discovery of HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, was made soon after. While some were initially resistant to acknowledge the connection (and indeed some remain so today), there is now clear evidence to prove that causes AIDS. So, in order to find the source of AIDS, it is necessary to look for the origin of HIV, and find out how, when and where first began to cause disease in humans.
HIV is a lent virus, and like all viruses of this type, it attacks the immune system. Lent viruses are in turn part of a larger group of viruses known as retroviruses. The name 'lent virus' literally means 'slow virus' because they take such a long time to produce any adverse effects in the body. They have been found in a number of different animals, including cats, sheep, horses and cattle. However, the most interesting lent virus in terms of the investigation into the origins of is the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) that affects monkeys.
It is now generally accepted that is a descendant of a Simian Immunodeficiency Virus because certain strains of SUVs bear a very close resemblance to HIV-1 and HIV-2, the two types of HIV. HIV-2 for example corresponds to SUVs, a strain of the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus found in the sooty mangabey (also known as the White-collared monkey), which is indigenous to western Africa.
The more virulent, pandemic strain of HIV, namely HIV-1, was until recently more difficult to place. Until 1999, the closest counterpart that had been identified was SIVcpz, the SIV found in chimpanzees. However, this virus still had certain significant differences from HIV.
During the last few years it has become possible not only to determine whether is present in a blood or plasma sample, but also to determine the particular subtype of the virus. Studying the subtype of virus of some of the earliest known instances of infection can help to provide clues about the time it first appeared in humans and its subsequent evolution. (the virus that causes AIDS) probably transfers to humans in Africa around 1930. probably enters Haiti around 1966. A 1998 analysis of the plasma sample from 1959 has suggested that HIV-1 was introduced into humans around the 1940s or the early 1950s; much earlier than previously thought. Other scientists have dated the sample to an even earlier period - perhaps as far back as the end of the 19th century.
Given the evidence, it seems highly likely that Africa was indeed the continent where the transfer of to humans first occurred (monkeys from Asia and South America have never been found to have SIVs that could cause in humans). In May 2006, the same group of researchers who first identified the Pan troglodytes' troglodytes' strain of SIVcpz, announced that they had narrowed down the location of this particular strain to wild chimpanzees found in the forests of Southern Cameroon.
It is firmly believed that probably entered the United States around 1970 .African doctors found a rise in opportunistic infections and wasting during the same year.At that time the Western scientists and doctors remained ignorant of the growing epidemic .In the year 1981,AIDS was detected in California and New York .The first cases were among gay men, then injecting drug users.
AIDS is reported among haemophiliacs and Haitians in the USA and also in several European countries in the year 1982.The name "AIDS" - Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome - is created. Community organisations in the UK and USA promote safer sex among gay men during the same year. AIDS is reported among non-drug using women and children in 1983.In the same year, experts become more confident that the cause of AIDS is infectious. Three thousand AIDS cases were reported in the USA; one thousand
Direct and efficient cellular transformation of primary rat mesenchymal precursor cells by KSHV Infections by viruses are associated with approximately 12% of human cancer. Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is causally linked to several malignancies commonly found in AIDS patients. The mechanism of KSHV-induced oncogenesis remains elusive, due in part to the lack of an adequate experimental system for cellular transformation of primary cells. Here, we report efficient infection and cellular transformation of primary rat embryonic metanephric mesenchymal precursor cells (MM cells) by KSHV. Cellular transformation occurred at as early as day 4 after infection and in nearly all infected cells. Transformed cells expressed hallmark vascular endothelial, lymphatic endothelial, and mesenchymal markers and efficiently induced tumors in nude mice. Low free testosterone in HIV?infected men is not associated with subclinical cardiovascular disease ConclusionsCompared with HIV?uninfected men, HIV?infected men had lower FT, as well as more prevalent carotid lesions. In both groups, FT was not associated with CAC presence, log carotid IMT, or carotid lesion presence, suggesting that FT does not influence subclinical CVD in this population of men with and at risk for HIV infection. Several lines of evidence suggest that retinoids (retinol-ROL or vitamin A, and its active metabolites, retinoic acids-RAs) play important pathogenic roles in HIV infection and combination antiretroviral therapy (cART)-related events. We previously reported that antiretrovirals alter RAs synthesis in vitro. We hypothesised that in vivo serum retinoid concentrations are affected by both cART and HIV infection. This might explain several clinical and laboratory abnormalities reported in HIV-infected patients receiving cART.
Methods:

NAIROBI, JANUARY 30, 2012 - As the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria marks its tenth anniversary—and on the heels of its leadership changes—people living with HIV/AIDS and those delivering and supporting HIV and TB treatment took to the streets as they warned that the political commitment made 10 years ago to address global health is evaporating, and that drastic funding shortfalls could cause an unraveling of a decade’s progress against the three diseases. The traditional standby has been two?dimensional echocardiography (2DE). Real time three?dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) offers incremental value for the evaluation of intracardiac masses by providing more accurate assessment of the size and shape of the mass as well as in some cases, composition of the mass. RT3DE aids with the relationship between the mass and adjacent structures. Therefore, here we discuss the subject of RT3DE evaluation of cardiac masses is reviewed and discussed in detail. No significant correlation was found between anti-Tat IgG and CD4+ T cell, CD8+ T cell and B cell counts. Despite the stable undetectable viral load, the appearance of anti-Tat IgG demonstrates that Tat is actively secreted into the plasma from HIV infected cells.

died of the disease. Scientists identified (initially called HTLV-III or LAV) as the cause of AIDS in the subsequent year. Western scientists become aware that AIDS is widespread in parts of Africa .The world's first needle exchange programme is set up in Amsterdam, the Netherlands .
In the year 1985, test was licensed for screening blood supplies .In the same year,AIDS was found in China, and also in all regions of the world .More than 38,000 cases of AIDS were reported from 85 countries in 1986.Uganda began promoting sexual behaviour change in response to AIDS .AZT was the first drug approved in 1987 for treating AIDS .The UK and other countries wake up to the danger of AIDS and began to raise awareness of the deadly disease.
In 1988,the American government conducted a national AIDS education campaign.The Health ministers met to discuss AIDS and established a World AIDS Day on 1st December 1988.World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.It is estimated that there are around 8 million people living with worldwide. In the year 1992,Thailand launches Asia's most extensive prevention programme .In 1993 it was found that AZT is of no benefit to those in the early stages of infection. Nevertheless,AZT is shown to reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of .Infant infections begin to fall in developed countries, due to use of AZT .
In 1995,the Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) is established .In 1996,it was found that the Combination antiretroviral treatment to be highly effective against HIV.In developed countries, many people began taking the new treatment.The Annual global spending on AIDS in low- and middle-income countries was $300 million .
In 1997,AIDS deaths begin to decline in developed countries, due to the new drugs.Brazil was the first developing country to begin providing free combination treatment .In other developing countries, only a tiny minority could access treatment for HIV.Around 22 million people were living with worldwide, according to estimates made later.
In 2001,at a UN Special Session, world leaders set long-term targets on HIV/AIDS .In the subsequent year,the Global Fund is established to boost the response to AIDS, TB and malaria and Botswana began Africa's first national AIDS treatment programme.In the subsequent year,AIDS drugs became more affordable for developing countries.The "3 by 5" campaign was launched to widen access to AIDS treatment .The first AIDS vaccine candidate to undergo a major trial was found to be ineffective .
In 2004,America launched a major initiative called PEPFAR to combat AIDS worldwide .After much hesitancy, South Africa began to provide free antiretroviral treatment.In the same period,circumcision was shown to reduce infection among heterosexual men . There was already such clear evidence that circumcision reduces the risk of infection, that to continue the trials would be unethical. This news caused great excitement among some experts.28% of people in developing countries who need treatment for are receiving it Annual global spending on AIDS in low- and middle-income countries is $8.9 billion .It is estimated that $14.9 billion would be needed for a truly effective response .In the year 2007, Around 33 million people are living with HIV, according to revised estimates .During the same year another major vaccine trial was halted after preliminary results show no benefit . It is likely that we will never know who the first person was to be infected with HIV, or exactly how it spread from that initial person. Scientists investigating the possibilities often become very attached to their individual 'pet' theories and insist that theirs is the only true answer, but the spread of AIDS could quite conceivably have been induced by a combination of many different events. Whether through injections, travel, wars, colonial practices or genetic engineering, the realities of the 20th Century have undoubtedly had a major role to play. Nevertheless, perhaps a more pressing concern for scientists today should not be how the AIDS epidemic originated, but how those it affects can be treated, how the further the spread of can be prevented and how the world can change to ensure a similar pandemic never occurs again.

an estimated 82% of American adults take at least one medication and 29% take five or more;
700,000 emergency department visits and 120,000 hospitalizations are due to adverse drug events annually;
$3.5 billion is spent on extra medical costs of adverse drug events annually;
at least 40% of costs associated with adverse drug events occurring outside hospitals can be prevented.

It seems obvious to us, but the Institute of Medicine was asked to make some recommendations about which preventive services for women should be included, and included birth control in those recommendations, released yesterday.
If they are adopted, preventive services including birth control could become much more affordable and accessible to women in the United States.

While much progress has been made in combatting the epidemic over the last three decades, must work remains. It continues to infect 56,000 and kill 18,000 people in the U.S. every year. “On the sixth annual National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, we join with these communities in support of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. An estimated 15,100 Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2006,1 the most recent year for which data are available. To date, more than 3,000 people with AIDS in these communities have died. I’ve submitted a column I wrote about Betsy Ryan several years ago when I was a columnist for The Day, a daily newspaper in New London, Conn.
Betsy continues to work ardently as a nurse in the infectious diseases department at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, as well as in HIV/AIDS education and prevention in our community, and, as a breast cancer survivor, summons enviable energy in her commitment.
She is most deserving of this honor.

Graves are seen through the empty window of an abandoned cemetery care taker’s hut in Cape Town’s Khayelitsha township. Many of those buried in the cemetery died from AIDS or related complications such as tuberculosis (TB). Some 5.5 million people live with HIV/AIDS in South Africa – more per capita than any other country – while 33 million people live with the disease worldwide. Despite having the world’s highest number of people receiving anti-retroviral therapy there are millions more who cannot access the life-saving drugs they need, either because they are too expensive or simply not available. Obstetricians and gynecologists choose to dedicate themselves to women?s health, but that alone does not qualify them as a Women?s Health Hero. A hero humbly exceeds the average expectations to create true and lasting positive change. Dr. John Varallo, through his selfless and untiring contributions to women?s health in the United States, Guyana, Tanzania, Uganda, Belize, Guatemala, and Australia, is a Women?s Health Hero.
While I know him through his work on cervical cancer prevention and treatment in Guyana, it is far from his only contribution to women?s health globally. Dr. Varallo works with the most vulnerable women, and inspires others to join him through education and collaboration.

Compound could be used against HIV-1, Nipah, Ebola and other deadly viruses
Viruses are insidious creatures. They differ from each other in many ways, and they can mutate ? at times seemingly at will, as with HIV ? to resist a host of weapons fired at them. Complicating matters further is that new viruses are constantly emerging.
One potential weapon is a small-molecule “broad spectrum” antiviral that will fight a host of viruses by attacking them through some feature common to an entire class of viruses. For example, there are two categories of viruses: lipid-enveloped and non-enveloped. Enveloped viruses are surrounded by a membrane that in effect ... kate kelland, reuters: british, US scientists grow integrase crystal, solving HIV/AIDS puzzle (2092) Scientists say [they've] crack[ed] HIV/AIDS puzzle for drugs

Last night I went to a Candlelight Service at church (I will talk about my new church in a bit) and had one of the most beautiful and touching experiences of my life. The Chicago Children's Choir was singing Stille Nacht (Silent Night), when they got through the first verse ushers moved through the aisles and lit congregants candles. As this process was going on lights in the church went out until the only light was that of our candles. It was during this time that I completely stopped and let myself be taken by the stillness and was at absolute peace. For me symbolically all the tiny candle flames reminded me of the struggle and those who fight for HIV/AIDS related causes. Assembly Democrats this afternoon choseAssemblyman John A. Perez as their new speaker, making the first-term Democrat the first openly gay man to hold the post.
Members emerged from a closed-door caucus at the historic Stanford Mansion to announce that Democrats had chosen Perez, of Los Angeles, on an unanimous vote.
A public vote on the Assembly floor is expected in January.
Perez walked arm-in-arm from the caucus meeting with current Assmbly Speaker Karen Bass and Kevin de Leon, a Los Angeles Democrat who had fought fiercely for the job but ultimately bowed out and formally nominated Perez before today’s voice vote.

The Los Angeles City Attorney?s office misrepresented the position of California Attorney General Jerry Brown today, implying that the state?s top law enforcement official said that all sales of cannabis are illegal. That never happened. On Saturday, KFI Radio in Los Angeles broadcast a previously recorded statement by the Attorney General Brown in which he says, ?Unfortunately, in some communities, Los Angeles in particular, there?s a lot of exploitation and just getting into the drug business, the dope business.?
Pundits at the notoriously conservative radio station (home to Rush Limbaugh and anti-gay crusader ?Dr. Laura? Schlesinger) then added their own spin to the Attorney General?s comments. On November 12, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria approved grants worth $2.4 billion to support treatment of these diseases worldwide.
Although it is the second largest amount ever approved by the Global Fund, the number of accepted grants fell by 35 percent from the year before.
The Global Fund is an organization that attracts aid from wealthy governments and the private sector for distribution among poor countries to prevent and treat people with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.
These diseases account for 12.5 percent of deaths in low-income nations, according to 2004 World Health Organization estimates.

We suggest four factors that could explain the diminishing proportion of HIV/AIDS borne by the populations moving through CFs; these four factors could contribute either alone or in combination. First, with increased life expectancy for persons with HIV with the advent of better therapeutics, infected persons are aging out of the crime-prone years, generally considered to be between the ages of 15 and 24. Second, while a person may have been infected in his or her crime-prone years, with HAART, prison AIDS mortality has fallen [20], and that person is more likely to survive incarceration, be released, and stay out. Third, the past decade has seen a decline in the number and proportion of HIV/AIDS cases among injection drug users [21], [22], probably due to interventions ... World AIDS Day Tues Dec 1 ? With the Los Angeles City Council poised to take up a medical marijuana ordinance after two years of contentious debate, L.A. County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley warned Tuesday that he intends to prosecute dispensaries that sell the drug even if the city’s leaders decide to allow those transactions.

Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley said today he will prosecute dispensaries that sell medical marijuana even if the Los Angeles City Council adopts an ordinance that does not ban such sales.
On Monday, two council committees rejected the city attorney?s advice and changed a provision in the proposed ordinance, allowing cash transactions as long as they complied with state law.

Two Los Angeles City Council committees rejected the advice of the city attorney and voted Monday to approve an ordinance that allows marijuana dispensaries to continue to sell the drug to people with a doctor’s recommendation.

A few miles from Los Angeles City Hall, a small experiment in marijuana regulation has been underway for years. While the state’s largest city passed a flawed moratorium, failed to enforce it, debated proposed rules endlessly and watched flummoxed as dispensaries multiplied, West Hollywood pressed ahead.
Confronted with its own dispensary explosion in 2005, the city surrounded by L.A. imposed a moratorium on dispensaries, clamped interim rules on the ones that were open, passed a strict ordinance and capped the number allowed at four, all within two years.

Rejecting the advice of the city attorney, two Los Angeles City Council committees voted today to scrap a proposed provision that would have banned the sale of medical marijuana.
The controversial measure, first proposed a year and a half ago, delayed deliberations as council members debated the wisdom of ignoring the opinion of the city’s top prosecutor. But about four hours into a raucous hearing, council members made it clear they were ready to move on.
“When can we finally stop the merry-go-round?” said Councilman Dennis Zine, who kicked off the City Council’s consideration of the issue in 2005 when concerns about dispensaries first surfaced. The Los Angeles City Attorney?s office found 5.25% of the cannabis samples tested from purchases made at Los Angeles dispensaries (3 out of 52 samples) to contain pesticide residues. Legal thresholds of pesticide residue on cannabis have not yet been established by the EPA or CDPR. By comparison, when the CDPR tests fresh ginger root purchased from California supermarkets, it has found that 5% of samples contain illegally high levels of pesticide residues.

Having abandoned the flawed interpretation of the California Supreme Court?s decision in People v.
